Odd starting issue with Mercruiser 140 I/O

Hi,

Great forum!

I have an odd starting problem with a 1980 Mercruiser 140 I/O. When cold, the first time or two that I turn the ignition key, the battery voltage drops as expected, and I believe the solenoid clicks, but nothing else happens (no cranking). Then, after the 3rd (or sometimes 4th) turn of the key, everything works properly. I believe this only happens when the engine is cold.

I've had the boat for a few weeks, and the problem doesn't seem to worsen or improve. The engine starts and runs perfectly other than this issue.

Bad starter motor, solenoid, or other?

I think it could be a bad connection or bad starter. You could rewire the start switch from the back of the key...or maybe have a helper turn the key while you tap the starter with a hammer...if it goes when tapped then its getting weak.

I think there's also a sticky posting about troubleshooting a no start.

Before you do anything else, check the battery cables for tightness. especially at the battery. If you have wing nuts, and you can remove them by hand, they are too loose.
Your discription sounds very much like a loose cable. don't forget to check the ground cables and the battery switch connections (if applicable).

Thanks for the suggestions! I will tighten the cables first, and do the other tests if that does not resolve the issue.
