Odd temp gauge concern

I recently purchased a used 03 2052. It's a 4.3 Merc Cruiser I/O. On the initial shake down run with a Merc Cruiser mechanic aboard everything seemed fine.

When running the boat I glance at the temp gauge occasionally and it seems to run at about 150 degrees.

When I flush the engine (using th Merc Cruiser ear muffs)the temp gauge acts erratically. At first no water is evacuated -- then the temp climbs to 175 and hot water begins to be evacuated at the stern drive. After climbing to 175 the temp gauge drops to zero. At this point hot water is still coming out the SD.

I have not kept the engine running long enough to see if the temp climbs back to normal as the directions for flushing recommend a 10 minuet time for this process. Is this normal? Thanks for you assistance

when flushing, the hot water is not a bad thing ... if it happens while running then you may have a problem ... remember that most marine gauges act funny a lot of the time, but I would really pay attention to the TEMP gauge as that is something not to ignore ... a lot of boats have an alarm when the temp goes up high ... check to see if your boat has this alarm

Thanks for the reply Lyle -everything seems to be fine when running the only oddity is the drop of the needle when flushing. Next time I'll let it run a little longer to see if the gauge moves up again
