OEM Temp Gauge

2010 Merc 3.0L MPI WEC, catalyst engine. The dash temp gauge reads around 175-180 during normal running. With 2 different IR Temp guns it reads 160 - 165 at thermostat housing and temp sensor area. Is it normal to have this type of inaccuracy as long as I know the temp diff ??

The temperature sending unit for the gauge is in direct contact with the coolant, so I'm not surprised it reads higher.

The only thing less reliable then a marine temp gauge is the fuel gauge.
