# of people in a boat

Our boat is rated for " 10 " people. (I forget the # of pounds). But we have a mini-schnauzer that weighs 20 #'s at the most.

The question is this: If we take 10 people. Does the dog count as a "person" ?

My wife ask me this question today, and I didn't know how to answer that honestly.

(We live in Kansas, if that makes any difference on the rules. I tried to find a answer on line, and in the book we have, but I couldn't come up with anything).

Re: # of people in a boat

A person is 150# of movable being. When they rate the person capacity it has to do with the list the boat would have if all the 'people' are on one side rather than the seating capacity or weight capacity of the boat. Don't worry about the 20# dog even if it thinks it is people.
When you are loaded near the maximum capacity your boat will not be as pleasant to drive as it normally is and you need to pay more attention to conditions.

like said-the dog is not a person and does not count for the max persons rating. theoretically the weigth of the dog counts into max loading of the boat , but at 20 lbs its of course peantus.

Ya gotta love women, it is good to have someone watch out for us and keep us from doing really stupid things but as stated the dog counts towards total weight but not as a person.

Keep in mind a "person" is 150 lbs so if you have 10 people and some of them are maybe a little over 150 you have to take "people" away to hit your load rating.

You would be hard pressed to find 10 150 lb. middle aged adults in a group of friends here in 'Bama... but we are the second fattest state in the U.S.

We've got 7 yr. old kids over 150 lbs.!!!

Here in GA, the max capacities are an "or" rule. Once you go over one of the limits you are done. So, yes as stated, the 20lb dog counts in the weight limit but if you have 10 people on board and your weight is still more than 20lb below the weight limit he/she can come along. As mentioned, the person weight is usually calculated at 150lbs. Our previous boat was also rated for 10 but the total weight limit was 1,450 not 1,500. When kids were young (pre-teen), we often would have 10 (2-4 adults and rest little kids) on board with no problem. Once they reached 15 yo or so, we started staying around 9 persons. When they became pretty much full grown we started trying to stick to 8.

Thanx, for the replies. We won't be taking 10 people with us, BUT, the water patrol on the lake we go to is, well, lets say, "less than a pleasant fella to talk to". I just didn't want a problem with him !! ;) The 20# Shanuzer wasn't that impressed with swimming, but he seemed to like to ride around, and get a face full of air !!!

Funny...our dog likes the water & swimming but hides behind console when underway to stay out of the wind. She does get mesmerized watching the wake behind boat much like humans do watching a campfire.

I notice several things with less people on board. The boat Performs better, Plans faster and less RPM to reach desire Speed. Sometimes I don't want guest with me for those very reasons.
