Off and on smoking - '60 40hp Johnson

Here's a beginner question for ya'. <br /><br />While running my motor on the lake it occasionally will smoke pretty heavily, and then at times you'll see next to none coming out.<br /><br />Is this something to worry about?<br /><br />One theory I had is maybe there are "pockets" of oil in the gas tank that don't get mixed in well causing excess smoke when the pump takes them in. Does this happen or am I just guessing? <br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Matt

Hidey Neighbor!<br /><br />Well we all have to gues at stuff sometimes. But yar wrong is time....Grin!<br /><br />Oil dont clump up in gas...aint possible..no way ..no how!<br /><br />But what is possible is..that unburned fuel and oil mix is building up in the exaust leg and when it gets heavy nuff build up..the hot exaust sets it off and she smokes uh mite.<br /><br />Mite be doing uh bunch of low speed trolling..fur gurls and stuff.... mabey fish.<br /><br />And its running a little rich at idel...and when ya open ur up she smokes sumpin awful....now Iam guessin.<br /><br />Good Luck!

I'm betting it's not "smoke", but rather it's steam. MIght have a problem with the thermostat sticking occasionally....<br /><br />- Scott
