I just got a 1972 boat with a "said" marine engine? The boat had a 250 l6 165mercruiser in it. So the motor the boat came with is supose to be rebuilt and is a 1968 160 out of a lobster boat but not installed yet i was looking at it and where the front mount is suppose to bolt to the block, only the left side has mounting holes, the right side of the block near oil filter only has an ear with a large like 3/4" hole... will i need to fabricate a bracket of some kind ordo they sell an adapter or??? stuck i think. Grrrr help

These engines have a single front mounting unit that is the on the very front of the engine, not side mounts.

i know the bracket that sits on the single point also bolts to the front of the motor wit two bolts on either end to conect it to the block. My block only has the two holes on one side of the front corner of the block

Re: oh no hmmm? front mount/engine??? help

I used to have a boat with a (Mercruiser) 230 cu-in GM I-6 in it and when I was shopping for an engine that replace it I went to a local wrecking yard.

I found that just about ALL of the 250cu -in GM 6cyl engines would fit . I looked specifically at the front engine mount. (which is just like the picture posted)

The engine that would not fit (because of the front mount) was the 292 block.(the 292 harmonic damper ran into the mount for one thing) The front mounting points were not the same too if I remember correctly. It's possible that you have a 292 block that came out of that "lobster boat" that someone made a different mount for.

The 292 block will accept a 250 or even a 230 head so all the marine manifolds will be compatible but it's possible that you will either have to find a 292 front mount (which may or may not even exist....but Mercruiser DID offer a 292 back in 1966) or you'll have to make one.

If you make one be absolutely sure that you make it so you can adjust up and down so you can set the alignment.

Rick

Re: oh no hmmm? front mount/engine??? help

hi rick thanks, the motor i have is a 1968 160 the one that came out was a 72 165. the mount clears the balance ok there's just no holes for the braket to bolt to on the oil filter front corner of the block. there's only an ear that sticks out just under the filter with like a 3/4" vertical hole. i think i can fabricate a piece to bolt it up but i'm not sure if the reason is because it's a non marine block. They say the cams are wrong for marine use???

It's not really the block (although there were a few engines designed SPECIFICALLY for marine/industrial use only) It's the CAM. Marine cams help prevent reversion(sucking water back up into the exhaust system) which is normally pretty BAD for an engine!!
