oil 2 cycle oil

I just got will an 88 merucry 9.9 motor and 2 cases of old 2 cycle oil...
It's over 20 years old is it ok to use it???????

Is it TCW3 rated ???? I do not honestly know if TCW3 was the recommended oil to use 20 years ago. If it is the recommended oil for your motor then it should be O.K.
Oil being pumped out of the ground is millions of years old yet we still use it !!!!! after refining. It does not "go off" as far as I know.

I've never seen a 2 stroke oil with a shelf life but i've heard of manufacturers putting them on motor oil cause the additives settle. If they're open, I wouldn't use them, not in the outboard anyway if they're open they'd be contaminated i'd find something in the garden shed to put it in, if they haven't been opened should be fine just give them a shake to agitate the additives. As Ken said make sure it's the right oil for your motor

Been told by an Amsoil rep that 2 cycle synthetic oils have a shelf life (years) ... Then been told by a Veedol/Castrol rep that petroleum based 2 cycle oil would be good forever.

I tend to beleve both guys in their respective fields.

tcw3 been recommended since the mid 60's.

TC-W3 came out about 1992 or so. Years before that was TC-W2 and previously the original TC-W specs were released.

Merc and OMC had their own oils, as did other outboard companies, long before the TC-W ratings were approved by the former BIA (now the NMMA)

My Merc manual starts with '94 and "after" so it says. In there it mentions that oil should be rated TCW-II. If that helps. Yes, I realize that III is out now and superior to it and you can't buy II anylonger, and why would you want to?

Agree on age of oil in the ground.

Agree that refining doesn't reduce it's lubricity over time if kept in a sealed container to keep out dirt and moisture. Unlike gasoline, it has no violatile hydrocarbons to evaporate that I know of.

Agree that additives will settle over time, but a good shaking, like most liquid products recommend before, use will easily fix that. I've had oils sit on the shelf for less than a year and noticed settling.

Older engine, no reason not to use the oil that was used in it when it was a pup. Oils just get better with time due to engine specs (requirements on lube) and lubrication technology. One thing I know they improved, over the 30W engine oil they used in the 50's was a lower viscosity oil to help in cold weather mixing.

Your engine was made in 1988. TC-W2 was "the" oil to use at that time. TC-W3 is even better.

We are only guessing exactly what your "old 2 cycle" oil is. If it is 20 years old it should be TC-W2.

If it is labeled as TC-W2 or TC-W3 certified it is okay to use in your engine (shake it up well before pouring). If not. . .not.

Ive heard of people paying stupid amounts of money for the tcw-2 oil because it is hard to find. I dont know if its even made anymore. But id look on ebay or something and see if you can sell it and buy twice as much tcw-3. Also dont understand why the guy didnt want the tcw-3 oil, as far as i know the -3 covers everything and more than the -2 did. He prob. just saw that the motor said tcw-2 and thought that he had to use that. I think that its just a couple more additaves in the -3.

I forget the term, but agencies that rate oils, like the Americal Petroleum Institute specify that upgraded oil back fits older engines.

No way would I go around looking for TCW or TCW-II oil.

I had some old 2 cycle oil that was never opened, about 15 years old, mobil. It had geletanous material that settled at the bottom. Is that ok to use? I think not.
