In light of the discussion about dead batteries due to leaving anchorage lights on...

Is anyone using an old-time oil lamp/lantern for anchoring?

If so, what are your experiences and where did you find it?

If your 12v battery can't keep a small LED lit for 8 or 10 hours the battery is junk!
Even a little 9v should keep it lit for that period! And come back for more the next night.

Fire, gas and fiberglass are not a good combination.
But it's one way to get to Valhalla!
And you will be seen!

Hehe..."WHOA! There's another one of those oil lamp guys! Someone call the fire department."

I figured open flame and boats are not a good combination.

One LED anchor light will last weeks on a deep 12v.

I've seen folks with Coleman lanterns on boats before. Even though the flame is behind glass, it's at a high temperature and would probably ignite combustible gasses. Then there's always the consideration of what would happen if it fell onto the deck. That could eassily be a catastrophic scenario. Although an oil/gas lantern might produce sufficient light, it's potentially too dangerous to employ.

Anchor Light Requirements

The Inland Rules specify that any vessel under 50 meters (164.1') at anchor must exhibit a white 360-degree light where it can be seen and have a two-mile visibility in most situations. Vessels less than 7 meters (23.9') must display anchor lights when anchored in or near a narrow channel, fairway, or anchorage, or where other vessels normally navigate.

A 360-degree white all-around light with two-mile visibility fulfills this requirement. Wire gauge and length of wiring, as well as battery condition, can affect a light's performance. Follow manufacturer's instructions to ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

By "Most Situations" they are referring to environmental variables inpacting visibility, such as fog, rain, snow, etc. They are not referring to the light itself. So a candle, oil lamp, solar garden lamp, etc would not satisfy this requirement.

That's pretty ingenious:D... Mount it on your stern light post, wndshield, or bimini top. I've seen small ones for 2 deer.

You missed the point entirely. You're in a boat for Peat's sake. Just doing any ole thing ain't legal!

If you can't afford USCG approved accessories, don't buy a boat, and keep all the rest of us safe as well!

+1. I can hardly believe some of the 'recommendations' that are being tossed out here and in some other recent threads. The mindless leading the clueless. Please save your creative, illegal solutions for situations that don't put others at risk...

I really, really, REALLY! hate like hell to say it, but it's time for mandatory education and licensing.

You guys make this too hard. Do what folks have been doing for 60 years or more. Get two batteries and a battery switch. Run the boat with the switch set to "both" until you get to the anchorage. Now set the switch to batt 1 on odd days and 2 on even days and relax on the hook. The next morning set the batt switch to the unused battery and start the motor. Now set the switch to both and charge 'em up.....

Coats Guard requires a WHITE light visible 360 degrees. An oil lamp has a yellow flame and is therefore illegal. I also doubt that is is visible the required distance. A coleman lantern has a brighter white flame but as said above, I wouldn't use it.
