Re: Oil and Oil Filter questions

If I started an oil thread, thsn someone should have taken be out behind the barn and teach me a lesson.

That would be me....I was afraid this would happen...you should ask an oil related question on a motorcycle forum...I am certain it will cause an internet brownout everytime! HAHA! I posted a warning....and failed to follow it. :p

Thanks for the links Don.

Re: Oil and Oil Filter questions

Like was said, lack of oil causes problems, not type of oil. I prefer synthetics as well, for the obvious reasons that you already know with racing bikes and lawnmowers. I asle feel they hold up better under extreme circumstances, and running an engine at 4000+RPM for extended periods is extreme in my book.

I have though about using Amsoil synthetic 2-Stroke in my Suziki oil injection, but I cannot justify the cost, especially since I do not want to change the oil mix ratio of the injection system. If it is going to burn the high $ synthetic at the same rate as conv, then no sense spending more $$ for it...

You will be fine with that synthetic. have fun...

I don't actually race the mowers...leave that to others...building the engines is fun and not requiring an exact science of engine building...close is good enough. Hehe.

Motorcycles however, that routinely hit 15K rpm..well now we're talking about testing out oils! Heh...I'm thinking even dino oil would be just fine at 4K all day long....but Don already pointed that out. It's all moot, got the Barney oil already..gonna use it. Report back next year if I notice a 100+HP increase and 10%(actual efficiency claim by Purple themselves) fuel efficiency.

I run purple in my four banger. Reason, easy to spot purple oil in the bilge if you have an oil leak. Like already stated, there are many oil that you could run without any problems.

I have some bridges to sell you if you believe that 10% reduction in fuel consumption!!

Have a great day

The RPM is actually pretty irrelevent. It's the heat and engine loading that destroys the oil. Bikes routinely run wide open over 15K for hours at a time. Tie your boat trailer behind it so it's loaded up enough to only be able to turn 4K and see how long it lasts dragging that.

Re: Oil and Oil Filter questions

I never used a synthetic in my old '88 since it was old when I got it but I have had good results with a HD straight weight oil like Chevron Delo 400 or Rotella T.....you could also use the Pennzoil Marine straight weights...but if I had a nearly new Mercruiser I'd for sure use the Merc oil...

About the filter...it's in that location because that's where Chevy put in on the first small blocks back in '55...you can put in a remote kit but I'd only use an OE quality Merc one because the car based ones don't hold up to marine use so I have heard...and if you don't get the remote kit....you may need an oil filter wrench that can grip it from the bottom or the side depending on where you have access...I have one with the 2 jaws that tightens when you loosen the filter...you use it with a 3/8s drive ratchet...tigt spot I have to push the rear seat foward and the port side battery backward....

The engine compartment on the Glastron is very roomy, and I am long and skinny...so getting to it is easy. However getting a grip on it looks a bit tough, it's tucked in tight to the housing and block...as you all know. That's a nifty tool, where'd you get it? I typically use a strap wrench, but I have a feeling that since this filter is painted over, more extreme measures may be required.

Can't find them around here, broke my strap wrench trying to get it off, so had to go get a new one. A few scraped knuckles...a lot of cursing...later all is well.

For those the wanna know, the filter on mine was a standard AC Delco PF47 filter (it was only partially painted over with the sticker still attached), the exact same filter GM used on their cars...including the the 3.8L. A quick internet search found many people taking a big stinky poo on that filter. I feel better now for changing it to something with a little more bling. LOLS.

Also FYI: When refilling with fresh oil, don't forget to put the cap on the drain hose...otherwise the oil will drain out as you fill it.

Ayuh,... Have it crossed to a Napa filter,... It's hard to beat Wix filters....
