It looks like I have some water in my bearing oil. I want to clean and change the seals. What type of oil do I use to re-fill? Also General tightness of axil bearings are the same between grease and oil? Alway heard trailer bearing should have loose fit up?

Re: Oil Bearings

I use a heavy weight gear oil like 80-90 Hypoid gear oil. I leave the wheel on the hub. Tighten the axle castellated nut until the there is no in and out play in the wheel. (Grab the tire top & bottom and try to rock it in & out). Important, Stop tightening the nut as soon as the play goes away, do not over-tighten. The next part is to loosen the nut enough until the next axle hole appears in the gap of the castellated nut and put the cotter pin in that hole. The whole point of this exercise is that you need to provide a little bit of slop so that the oil can reduce the friction between the bearing running surfaces. If it's too tight, the oil can't cover all the surfaces and the bearings will fail in a short time. One last thing, after you run the trailer for approx 2 miles at moderate speeds stop & check the temperature of the bearing hubs. If you did it right.......they should be cool. Good luck, hope this helps.
Kev.
