One more question:<br /><br />Does it matter what brand of oil as long as it has the TC-W3? At the local supermarket, they carry their own, very cheap brand. It's about 1/2 the cost of the pennzoil sitting next to it. I've used it twice, and couldn't tell any difference, but would hate to sieze a motor over $5. It has the TC-W3 on the bottle.<br /><br />Thanks.

Cheap oils usually just have the bear minimum amount of additives in the oil to meet TCW-3 specifications. Better, higher cost oils go above and beyond. With that said, the cheap TCW-3 oils are still better than the oils available in 1965 when your engine was new.

I agree with TLL. Cheap TCW3 oil will not cause your engine to seize. If it seizes, it's due to something else. Cheaper oil will also smoke a bit more, but I like the smell of outboard.

With many brands of TC-W3 the price has more to do with marketing than with the amount of additives and other pretensions at higher quality.<br /><br />"Cheap" or "expensive" are not reliable ways to judge any product, including outboard oil. Advertizing, distribution, stocking, sales volume and promotions all affect the price more than does any difference in base stock or additives.<br /><br />The TC-W3 spec guarantees that an oil is safe and reliable for use in water cooled, carbureted 2 stroke engines.<br /><br />I know of no engine failures attributable to the use of any TC-W3 oil in the engines it is spec-ed for.

Cool .. thanks, JB. I think I'm sticking with the cheaper brand. We've had some fairly catastrophic financial issues lately .. while I'll cut back on everything, the one thing I don't want to quit is boating. It's the best therapy I've seen.

Anything you can get now is better than what was available back then. ;)

Just make sure you are mixing at the right ratio, some older engines had mix rastios from 16:1-24:1.

JB has it nailed. No diff.....it mostly comes down to ADVERTISING! Ads DO work. And the more ads ya see, the more it cost. Product don't change, just the price. and the more it cost, the more people think the product must be superior, which just feeds on itself. Do you have any idea just what it cost for a 4x12 inch sticker space cost on some of these race cars, boats, etc? Make yer heart stop..........

Real quick question.........when running an optimax, do you have to buy the $29.00 gal oil that states for use in "Optimax and all other 2 stroke marine engines".....or the $16.00 gal at wal mart that states TC-W3 oil good for any 2 stroke marine engine.

Optimax are direct injected, Dust. That is why I specified carbureted engines for TC-W3.<br /><br />Because no fuel circulates through the crankcase in DFI engines they have somewhat different needs for the oil that is in there all alone.<br /><br />For that reason I would use an oil specified for DFI engines. It may not be necessary in the case of some DFI engines, but, for example, I think the early FICHT DFI JohnnyRudes required oil specified for DFI.
