Oil change, penta SX-M

I know this horse is beat to death but I have to ask, let my oil grain out all night and ready to fill back up. Bought a Clymers manual and it says to fill from bottom, some say, on here, to fill from middle. Boat is a 1998, I bought it about 4 months ago, and I was getting around to checking some things and I noticed the oil stunk, bad and was black, so where to fill new oil, thanks

Drain from the bottom and refill from the middle. Is thee a dipstick on top? If so, make sure its out and when you see it come out replace the filling screw and then check the level with the dipstick to make sure its full.

Very Wrong!!!! Those are the directions for an OMC Cobra.


You fill and drain from the BOTTOM on a Volvo SX until it reaches the middle. After you do that, check with the dipstick.

Def fill from the bottom untill it comes out of the middle hole, apparently, ive been told that air can get trapped in the oil galleries giving a false reading?
The synthetic gear oil does pong, im used to it after mant a JCB gear oil change

Hey, thanks fellows, reading old post, some would say the middle, but lately I saw someone have a drawing on here that showed the bottom, so many thanks I'm at it now.

There is no middle fill screw on an SX, that was the old dog style Cobra drives you filled from the middle, not the Volvo SX, so don't go looking for it.
Here are the procedures for changing the gear lube from the OEM service manual. Kind of a handy thing to have if your new at drive maintenance.

The middle hole I am referring to is the oil level screw hole.
