Oil change question on Mercruiser 5.0

This year for the first time I will be changing my own oil. I had the dealer do it previously. I bought the "oil boy" pump and it should be pretty straight forward draining the oil in the block. The question I have concerns the filter. I have the "remote" filter which is mounted at the front of the engine with the filter upside down on the mount. I am assuming this filter has an anti-drainback valve and therefore is full of oil. What so you do to prevent that oil from going all over when you unscrew the filter? If I poke a hole in the top of it does that allow it to drain? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

dave

due to the design some spilling is going to happen even to the neat people so i laydown something like a big plastic bag and use some plastic trays as the main drip catcher and allways have a big roll of paper towels

tommays

Dave Tommays says that due to the design that spillage is going to happen. i have changed a many oil filters and if you let the upside down ones set for 24 hours there will not be a drop of oil . the oil filter will drain itself when they are installed upside down. I have never had to clean up afterwards. like i say the filters that are installed upright stay full of oil even after setting so you will have to dispose of oil and filter.

its all good but you get a much better drain out when the oil is warm and if you have one of the hoses that drain through the transmon it will really drain slow when cold

tommays

Some remote mounts have a plug in the metal housing that can be removed for draining prior to filter removal. Check yours. Otherwise you can remove a line to drain. Not the best for marine application, but you could also install a drain valve in-line.

Besides...who wants to make a 10-15 minute job into a 24 hours job. ;) Get some paper towels and don't be scared to get a little oil on your hands...

Poke a hole in the top and do something else for 5 mins ---- much less mess.

My method is to get one of those big zip lock bags with the sliding zippers.

Loosen the oil filter until it is just ready to come off. Cover filter and the base of the remote mount with bag, zip zipper underneath remote mount until snug. Continue turning bag and filter until it flops into bag.

You're done and not a drop anywhere but inside the bag.

Thanks for all the advice. This brings up another question concerning checking oil level. Since everyone seems to think all the oil drains out of the filter, when is the correct time to check dipstick oil level? It seems you would get different readings depending on whether you did it right after engine shutdown or let it sit for awhile.

I use a needlepoint hoop and a couple of Walmart bags, doubled up to catch the oil and the filter... should I get the dropsies!

Fill the engine with the prescribed ammount of oil, start and let it run for about 30 seconds, then stop and check your oil again. This will allow the filter to fill, and since you should be less than a quart low, you won't be low enough to cause any problems.

Re: Oil change question on Mercruiser 5.0

Okay, quicky clarify: if your filter is mounted upside down and when you change it, no matter how long you've waited, there is no oil in it, you're either using the wrong oil filter or one with an inadequate anti drain-back valve.
When you loosen the filter from the housing, oil will not drain out until the nipple is free from the filter threads. We use oil absorbent pads found at any marine parts dealer, or you can use anything absorbent, but please don't use plastic bags. Here's why: as an oil reclamation facility accepting used oil and filters from the public, I HATE when the public brings me plastic bags full of oil and filters. The plastic starts to decompose immediately upon contact with the caustic used oil and makes a mess everywhere, including the trash where some people throw away this toxic waste. Be responsible and get the proper disposal equipment. For most of you a 5 gallon bucket for your used oil and filter ONLY is the best solution. Place all other lightly soiled material in its appropriate trash or recylcing bin.
As you remove the filter, have your absorbent material surrounding the filter base in order to catch the drops, and as you finish loosening the filter, quickly flip it right side up and place in your bucket.
When you fill to spec with your oil capacity, run the engine for 10 seconds AFTER your oil pressure gauge comes up to pressure. Wait about 2 minutes and then check. This allows the oil to drain out of the head and valve area and back into the crankcase. Your 5 Liter should take about 5 1/2 quarts with filter.
As a note, look for a 3/8" black hose running up the port side of the motor with a brass plug in it and a brass hanger. If your engine has this oil drain tube use it instead of the dipstick in order to drain all the oil out of the block. Good Luck.

red fuel is 1000%percent correct. oil filters should never drain back thru the pump into the engine this is to insure instant oil supply at startup.

Re: Oil change question on Mercruiser 5.0

hello
I beg to differ
most upside down filters will drain, not all but most. yahaha, some mercrusiers and Mazda rotary all will.
that is why it is so nessasary to get an exact replacement as some filters have an anti-drain back valve and others dont but the two will physically interchange. they wont be correct but they will thread on and seal.
but always expect the filter is going to drain a bit and have your absorbant pads ready. whats terrible is when you do get it off without making a mess you proceed to get it out of the engine bay and carefully drop it all over the carpet :) :) .

Before you drain the oil, loosen the filter just enough to allow air in and no oil to leak out. You can also poke two holes in the filter, one in the middle and one off to the edge. The first method is less messy. In order to get all the oil out, the filter has to drain first.
