Oil Change / Synthetic

Late last summer I repowered my 270 Sundancer with two new 4.4 liter, EFI engines. It was late in the season and I probably only have +/- 10 hours on the new engines. The boat has not been used all winter. I would like to use a good synthetic oil and am wondering if I should change the oil now at the beginning of the season or wait until the breakin oil has more hours on it.
Thanks.

what ever you pick the motors are not broken in yet it would be best to put the number of hours recomened by the engine bulder

tommays

AFTER the engine is broken in, use any oil you like, and change it and the filter at recommended intervals.
Just remember one thing, in your owners manual is the Manufacturers recommendations for oil type and viscosity. Read it before you do anything else.
NO manufacturer has ever voided a warranty for type of oil.........unless you use ATF or 90W in the engine  and then it might happen.

The catch is finding a synthetic 25W40. About all I ever see is 10W30 and 40 which ain't good enough.

I think Don is right, wait until the motors are broke in. From what I've been told, if you use synthetic, use it from the beginning and stick with it. Whatever you decide to use I would wait until the motors are broken in.

Its true, you need to follow tha manufactures recomendation as to the break in first.

Might I ask what your reasons for using a synthetic are? Also, what brand, and weight you are concidering.

I am running straight 40# Penzoil in my boat. I happen to get a case of it at a garage sale for $5. Will this hurt my older motor in sunny california?

Thanks

What is the API designation on the bottle? Does your manual say its OK to use a 40 weight?

If you were water skiing a lot or towing a tube where the engine temp was staying warm most of the time. Id say that if the designation was right then you should be fine. But as you say, "its converted to a bass boat", I think I would rather have an oil that would crank better when cooled off.

Personally I think I would use a 15W-40 HDDO, (Heavy Duty Diesel oil) Like Dello 400 if it were me. There certainly isnt anything wrong with the Mercruiser 25W-40 either, but it is a lot more money.
