Was it water or antifreeze in the oil?

It was milky like water; Right before I got this leak I had removed the tank and I think I used the same gasket thats why it leaked. Fortunately it was in my driveway when it happened.

So you used regular kerosene? No thickening aditives?

Yes just regular kerosene, I didn't run the engine under load just at idle till it was warmed up.

I have decided to flush the engine with a 5-20 a few times, then see if water keeps coming in. If so then I will remove the exchanger and see if it is damaged. My problem is to drain the oil I have removed the dipstick tube, but the lower fitting is immoveable so some of the old oil remains each time.

Re: Oil changes and bellows questions

Ok so changed most of the oil and added 5 20 in the motor. Fired up after jumping the battery. Idled perfect. No noise no nothing unusual. Had to clean the contact on the temp sensor but it ran for about 15 minutes and stayed in normal range. Some of the oil seemed to siphon out with the pump but still had to remove the dipstick tube to drain it better. I decided to add oil to it as it was draining thinking the cooler oil will push the hotter oil out of the tube. So I am going to wait to see if regular oil runs out after a bit. Then I will repeat a few times. While it was running I did not notice water getting in anywhere. But since the oil was milky to begin with it is difficult to tell. Hopefully it was nothing but river water coming due to the bellows.

PS, Sorry for missing letters, I bought my kids gaming computer to help him pay his rent and the keys are horrible on this thing. Gotta mash em down

Did the water get in as high as the crank? If so, that will cause a little water to get by the crank seal and would cause your milky oil. Also, if it did get that high and also hit your starter, you need to replace it as well.

Starter is new, but perhaps it did get that high. I don't know I had a boat with 4 screaming kids and 2 women driving me crazy,, But that may be what occurred. I had thought the same thing today while it ran and i was watching it.

If the starter you have on now got even slightly submerged, it will eventually fail. Couldn't tell if you meant the starter was new before or after the water intrusion.

Sorry it was before, but I will remove it and clean it maybe new brushes etc. Seems like this is a never ending repair project, I spend more time repairing than I do in the water.:(

Re: Oil changes and bellows questions

For anyone interested, I did my last oil change with 5-20 and ran the motor for 1/2 hour. NO MILK!
Bad news is I have a bellows job ahead of me.
Bruceb , I would say it was the water getting past the seal and entering into the crank case as suspected. Luckily it appears no harm has been done as of yet. Now to drain it and install the expensive 25-40 oil merc calls for @ 5.00 a quart.
also how does any of you clean the engine while in the boat? Gunk engine cleaner and a hose?
