Oil coming out of water intake?! Please help!

Hi guys,
I've been reading allot and learning allot from all the things I've found on this sight. I decided to join in hopes of learning more from people that have the same passion for boats as I do =D
I'm probably going to have allot of questions so any input is greatly appreciated!!
I was just given a 1977 Sea Ray SRV 200. It is in absolutely great shape! Looks like its never even seen a sandy beach. All fresh water from what I can tell. Everything is solid and tight. I cant find a hour meter so don't know about that. It has a 351W 235 OMC (without tilt) and not totally sure about the out drive. From what I've read its the 800 stringer?? How can I tell? I was told the boat sat for a few years. I bought a new battery and put the out drive down. When I did, oil started dripping out of the small hole (maybe 1" diameter) above the prop. I checked the oil dipstick on top of the out drive and it showed no oil. Any ideas?
I also am going to have to replace the intake manifolds. There is major rust! Any tips on that and where to go for affordable parts is much appreciated!

possibly,,,
a failed upper seal,
a failed impeller shaft seal(s),
maybe a failed bearing housing lower O-ring.
Have U inspected the impeller housing?
Maybe she is not worth it.

Well, I'm sure there'll be a plethora of people in here telling you what you should do......


From what you describe,

You have a 33 year old boat with a 33 year old engine & drive manufactured by a company that no longer exists.

Probably not too bad in it's day I guess


You also have several problems that could cost FAR more to fix than the boat will be worth even after you fix then.(not counting ANY labor)

I also am going to have to replace the intake manifolds. There is major rust!

I think you must mean exhaust manifolds? but if you see "major" rust, and the intake and exhaust manifolds are severely corroded.....think what shape the engine block is in......


If the drive doesn't have any oil in it and either leaked out or wasn't full etc.....someone may have run it that way. I think the minimum might be to fill it back up but if it's leaking, it'll have to be AT LEAST resealed...(or rebuilt/replaced)


There are no good scenarios here. I think you have a free boat. It won't cost you a dime if you don't spend any money on it.

Of course, you could spend THOUSANDS on it if you want to get it running.

Compare that with spending a few thousand on a boat with a (currently supported) engine and drive that already runs and that might be a better choice.....


Your other choices might be to find a similarly powered boat with a running OMC "Stringer " (sic) inside and swap out all of it....

OR,

Replace & rework the transom and "install" newer Volvo or Mercruiser power.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, yes. don't spend any money at all on it......part it out.....

Dang! I was sure hoping you'd say "no big deal. Great find" lol Well... thank you all so much for the insight and quick response. I was told the out drive had been rebuilt in 03 and in the paper work he gave, there WAS allot of work done to it. He said it was all working well the last time he ran it. I wouldn't believe a word of it but I know the guy well and he's a honest person. The engine moves freely and all "looks" good except the.... yes.... exhaust manifolds. I'll fill the out drive with oil and see if that?s the source of the oil leak. I haven't attempted to start it yet. I'm going to change the plugs, oil and gas, cross my fingers and give it a go.

Well,


Mine is not really a good comparison because I did not have to do any real transom modifications(other than drill a couple of extra holes) to make the Mercruiser fit where the Cobra was.... You would have to to EXTENSIVE modifications to make a newer Volvo or Merc engine and drive fit.....

I paid $5000 for the complete 454/Bravo set up that included the trim pump, electrical harness, gages, gimbal.....everything.

It WAS a pretty good deal but they're out there all over the place if you look.
