Hi I have a four winns 1996 horizon with a 6 cylinder volvo penta i/o with a cobra sx outdrive. The manual say inorder to drain the water remove both the block plug and manifold hose on each side of the engine. It also mentions an oil cooler which I presume is part of the power steering unit. My question is is where is the oil cooler located, does it need to be drained and how is this accomplished.

Re: oil cooler

Follow the hoses from the power steering pump to the cylinder attached to the transom plate, you will find it. Normally it's on the back of the engine block. It has 4 hoses going to it. 2 small ones for the power steering fluid and 2 bigger ones for the cooling water.
It's item 17 in the picture.

Re: oil cooler

Thanks, for some good advice, a picture is worth a thousand words. I doubt I would be able to reach it if its on the back of the engine block.

Do you need to drain the cooler or is the procedure I followed (remove both block plugs and both manifold hoses) enough to drain the oil cooler?

If not any tips on how to reach and drain the oil cooler. I have a 1996 Horizon Rx which is 18 foot and there's very little room. Just getting the block plugs was a stretch.

Re: oil cooler

No, draining the block and manifold has nothing to do with the cooler, or the raw water pump on the front of the engine. Pull the hoses off the raw water pump and drain them, that may take care of the cooler if it is standing on end, hard to say, without looking at where it's located.
Even if it's hard to get at, it has to be drained, or you will be trying to replace it next spring.

Re: oil cooler

Thanks again, I did pull both hoses off the raw water pump. I guess what you're saying is that is if the oil cooler is up and down it may have drained. If its sideways I guess I need to losen the mounting hardware, remove one hose and tilt it down to drain.
