Boats still in storage but I'm trying to ease the pain by buying a little bit ata time. Probably still be painful if you know what I mean (the admiral:redface:)
1.Can anyone tell me the thread size & count for the drain plug on a 2000 mercruiser 5.0 w Thunderbolt IV? Is the drain kit worth it $27.00?
2.Also: last spring when I pulled my dist cap there was a gasket between the cap and distributer. Most of the caps I am seeing don't show the gasket w the replacement cap/rotor? If it has it now does it need to be replaced w same?
3.Should I stick with the factory Champion plug #s or is a NGK cross ref plug Ok? Years ago I can remember an issue with Champion plugs vs AC In GM autos

if you want it so you can drain out the garboard drain plug, forget it. That is the slowest and hardest way possible to drain th oil. If you are going to use a pump of some sort, just hook it to the dipstick tube (NOT another tube you slide into the dipstick tube) and pump it out. The dipstick tube is attached to the bottom of the pan already, so not sure how an aftermarket hose will attach and allow you use of the dipstick.

OEM caps have the gasket with the cap. Aftermarket has to cheapen up somehow.

I wouldn't use any Champion spark plug in any boat......................

NGK is Mercruisers go to plug.

2000 mercruiser 5.0 w Thunderbolt IV?

Merc didn't use the TB IV in 2000, that or you don't have a 2000, which is it, Merc SN for the engine would be best, they also don't go by year in their parts.

Here is the tunup specs for a 2000 engine.

Re: Oil drain kit

All the important #s I need to verify are in the boat,in the mine. But your thinking a 2000 5.0 did not have the thunderbolt iv ignition? I,m almost certain the carb cover say it is.
Now the oil drain question. You say not to use the topsider oil vacuum pump w the tube that goes inside the dipstick tube, but pull the vacuum straight from the dipstick tube. right?

Yes, warm the engine up so the oil is warm and just clamp your hose on the top of the dip stick tube, and have at it. Only some early engines (70's) needed a tube put into the dipstick. Not anymore.

Don't need a serial number really, you have a 2000 boat, doubt they put a 95 or earlier engine in it. They are the ones that had a Thunderbolt IV ignition.
