OK guys this may sound really stupid but here it goes. I know on my past outboards the oil drain plugs were large with a slotted head. I have one with a slotted head larger size, and for the drain plug i don't see one anywhere? I undid this small star headed screw on the bottom of the motor and only a dixie cup worth of water came out no oil at all? Does this means there is no oil in the unit? or did I undo a wrong screw? I also removed the vent screw and there was oil on that screw but nothing coming out of the bottom at all even if i tilted it etc. I jsu got this motor this year had great compression on each cylinder but unfortunately have not had a chance to run it yet, I literally picked it up for $100. Can someone help me out?, as well if there is no oil in it for some reason is everything in the bottom end shot? It seems to operate fine all the gears etc when i manually put it in drive the prop won't spin by hand when it neutral it does and when in reverse it will not spin which is all normal correct? any help would be great

Re: oil drain plug on 1970 33 evinrude?

Here is a post under the top sevret file form Tashasdaddy. Maybe it will help. It sounds like the Phillips screw wasnt supposed to move.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changing lower unit oil

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs part # 311598, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.

you can also change the slotted plugs to hex head, (allen wrenches) which are more user friendly.

If you look at the parts diagram for this model at http://shop.evinrude.com/

It shows the drain plug on the very bottom ... underneath

Do not remove the Philips headed screw... Whoops you have ... it is the pivot pin for part of the shift mechanism .. I hope you have got it back properly.

Diagram HERE The drain plug is the same as the level plug both #14 in the diagram.

It sounds as though yours was empty!

If you got the phillips screw back in and it shifts in/out of all gears, it is ok and you are lucky.

The drain plug is on the bottom of the pointy front of the case. Put oil in the drain till it comes out the vent. Then replace vent screw before removing pump from drain. Then quickly remove pump and install drain plug. They make handy pumps for that purpose. Probably have them here at iboats.

OR, buy the oil in squeeze tubes. Takes more than one. Messy.

We can't answer the question concerning possible internal damage. No way for us to know from here. Fill it with oil and see how it goes....

yea I will have to I guess fill it up and try putting it into gear then and see how it goes this is unfortunate but i know i saw the water come out which I thought was not a good sign so Im definately going to have to replace all the seals to ensure it is ok and at that point I guess I will know where I sit. So how come the top vent scew had oil on it when I pulled it out then?

OK update, pulled lower drain plug, nothing not a drip jsut one drip of a dirty black water droplet, no shavings on the plug though so I guess that is a good sign, is is there another part to check for shavings sorry guys not familiar with this older motor.

I would put new oil in it and make sure you replace the gaskets on both plugs. Take it out once and see how it operates. After you get it back home, check the oil and make sure no water is getting in. If there is, then it could be one of three things letting water in.

1. Shift rod seal
2. Prop seal
3. Drive shaft seal.

These are the three most common areas of water intrusion.

Any/all of the above.

What zephyr said--fill it up and test run it. There is always time to tear it apart once you know if it works normally or grinds, jumps, howls, whatever.

But that is not a seal with moving parts in it. It's not prone to wear like the other three. They typically won't leak like the rest.;)

well thanks guys looks like the lower units going to be coming off this weeknd for me to inspect it, I bought a manual today and all my seals so fingers crossed its only the old owner aka( hackers jobber seal fix) which is causing the water/loss of oil.
