oil drain screws frozen

Hi,<br /><br />I have a 110 HP 1996 Evinrude. I'm trying to change the oil in the foot, and both screws are essentially frozen (the previous used mechanic used an air gun without setting the torque). I've tried screwdrivers, rachets, and impact drivers but none will loosen the screws. And I'm at the point where the heads are starting to get pretty chewed up.<br /><br />Any suggestions? My only thought is to drill them out, but I'm afraid of getting filings in the lower unit.<br /><br />Thanks.

try hitting a centre punch square on about 3-4mm from edge and then keeping the tip in the indent tap it at an angle that will push the screw anti clockwise. this has rarely failed me in many applications. if you are unlucky enough to have to drill it out, any filings will be drawn out with the oil but if the previous owners actions are an indication of his mechanical skills i'm sure there will be plenty of bits in there already! hope this helps.

Try Heating them (slowly) with a Propane torch.......this works on mine........ and i have to do it everytime...it seems they get tight on thier own..

Hi mjs,<br />What works for me in situations like this is take a flat pointed punch or a bolt about the same diameter as the screw head. place it square on the screw head and give it a couple good raps with a hammer. Most of the time this will loosen the screw up enough to get it out.<br /><br />Good luck
