Has anyone on this forum made their own oil drain tube? I have been looking on line and the kits I see are very expensive and most will not pass thru the bilge drain hole. I was just curious if any of you had made your own and what did you use?
I have a M/C 470 stuffed in a very small dog house in the rear middle toon of my JC Tritoon.

Re: Oil Drain Tube?

I have used pumps in the past, I never get more than 3 quarts out.

It;s sad that a way to drain is not furnished from the start. You just can't get all the bottom stuff out with a pump. I use one too and hate to use it. I would sure rig a drain system if I had the engine out.

Re: Oil Drain Tube?

I bought and installed a oil drain hose kit for my new engine. However, with the limited engine compartment space, not having the oil drain plug tethered to the hose, and the hose not being able to completely pull through the drain plug hole I decided to just strap the hose to the front of the engine. When it comes time to change the oil, I unscrew the drain hose fitting and use my oil extractor to suck all the oil out. Warm the oil up, and give the oil extractor 20 pumps and drink a cold beer while it sucks the sump dry.

Before, I used the same pump and connected it to the dipstick tube, which had the garden hose thread fitting. But I was never able to get all the oil out.

If your not getting more the 3 qts out, get a better extractor.

When my motor was full of jelly(water and oil mixture) I was able to get over 8 qts out.

GUys, I had the same problem, but found an easy solution. If you have a GM block, look for the alternative dipstick position, it is on the RHS looking forward (i.e. away from the flywheel end). Its on the block just above the join with the oil pan where there is a slight kink. If you go to an auto supplier and buy a replacement dipstick and tube, take it home and throw awy the dipstick. Cut the tube down so that when you push it into the hole, an inch points out upwards. Simply put a plastic cap over it and when you want to drain the oil, poke the drain pipe down into this stubby tube. You can orientate the oil pumping tube so that it is right down into the sump pan, so all of your oil can be removed. I live in the UK, and it cost me the equivalent of $15, so for you guys chevy parts are much cheaper!
