i have an 08 150TLR and can someone tell me if the yahama oil filter (cartridge type like on an auto) filters out water ( not remove water just seperates it and leaves it on the bottom)...or it just filters out particulates.

Re: oil filter question???

Water and oil in the motor will form an emulsion, causing a "milkyness" in the oil, and the oil filter will not remove the water. A fuel/water separator type filter will seperate and hold the water in the bottom area of the cartridge, to be drained, dumped or cartridge changed.

A yamaha OIL FILTER for a 4 stroke outboard does NOT filter out or separate water from the oil. An OIL FILTER only screens out tiny particles, depending on the filter and media design.

Are you confusing engine OIL FILTERS with boat mounted FUEL-WATER SEPARATORS?

Re: oil filter question???

If it's the 10 micron spin on type Yamaha filter, I think the answer is yes - it is a water seperating fuel filter cartridge. Take a look at the labeling on the outside of the cartridge if it's accessible - it might state "Marine Fuel/Water Separating Filter".

There is, of course, a limit as to how much water this filter element can handle. (Don't ask how I know this.) Whenever I change out the cartridge on my boat, I dump the contents of the old filter into a large, clean, glass jar so I can examine exactly what came out of the tank. The last few times the contents was crystal clear. :)

All fuel filters of that type will pass water through them. It is the filter cannister size and design that traps water as it is heavier than gasoline until it starts to pass through the filtering media.

Here is an older article that explains things pretty well:
