Oil Filters - Are anti drainback valves a good thing?

I have 2 different applications; one where the filter mounts with the filter hanging underneath (automotive), the other with the filter sitting on top of the mount (boat). Is having an anti-drainback valve in the filter a good/bad idea in either or both of these applications?

I ask because I've used both and see some pro's con's to both. For the filter hanging down I can't see that it would be helpful as the filter doesn't drain at shutdown. It does make it more difficult to poke a hole in the filter to drain it before removal....so a con in that application. For the filter on top of the mount I could see the valve as an advantage since it keeps the oil from running out of the filter (in my mind, reducing the "dry start" aspect), but again it makes it more difficult to drain the filter before removal.

Looking for a sanity check here as well as any real world anecdotal evidence you might have.

Howdy,

Any filter application that has the filter upright, usually doesn't require an anti-drain back valve.

Filters that are mounted horizontally or upside down, usually always require it because it the filter has to be filled each start, increasing the amount of time with NO oil pressure immediately after start.

You should use the "correct" filter for the engine.

Ayuh,... I disagree slightly....:D

Even though you won't see pressure on the gauge,...
The Motor actually has Plenty of oil, where it needs it, as the filter is refilling....
You should use the "correct" filter for the engine.
Now, That I completely Agree with....

My dilemma is that the "correct" filter (at least from what I can find) comes in both flavors; with and without the valve. Just depends on what brand you're buying.

Lately I've been using an Amsoil Oea(?)24 filter in both applications and it has the valve, but other brands (including Mercruiser) don't have the valve. I'm shying away from the "factory" Merc filter because it's so much smaller, and there's plenty of room for a much larger filter....larger even than what I'm using. I'm also shying away from Fram due to some of the other brands being of obviously better quality, even though I've used Fram in automotive applications for many years with no problems.

I figured this would be a good twist on an oil thread.

Hey! We can disagree sometimes!!!;)

All kidd'n aside though, here's a great article on filters.....the important part is at the end of the article where they indicate that there's only a "few" actual filter manufacturers out there in radio land!!

no dilemma there... it won't hurt to have it, it won't hurt if you don't have it

Wix filters for me, and they incorporate the anti-drain valve. They also make manufacture a large portion of the oil filters under other brand names.

Use the filter with the valve, then you can't go wrong ... ;)

Anti drainback valves also perform another very important function! They keep all the particles filtered out of the oil from being drained back into the engine at shutoff!

Also, if I couldn't use an Amsoil filter, I would find a Purolator Pur One.
