Does the existence of oil on old plugs of an outboard mean the same as it does for a car? Poor oil management? Advanced engine wear? ETC? Thanks

Re: Oil fouled plugs

If there is some oil on the plugs and the engine is a two stroke then that is OK. However if it is a two stroke or 4 stroke and the spark plug is soaked in oil then it means that the engine needs an overhall new piston rings if you are really unlucky a rebore and a new piston. However this will increse the size of the engine

Thanks, I don't recall them being completely soaked. It is a three cylinder 2 stroke and only the top two plugs had oil on them. Enough to make them black, but not very wet.

Make sure you have good spark. Run a compression check. You may try a decarb also a carb adjustment may help. Tim
