Thanks alcan I've been mixing it a little heavier than that just to be on the safe side until I could find out what the correct mixture was.

I have a 57 35hp and my dealer advised me to use 4 cycle (regular 30 weight non detergent) and mix it 40:1. Has kept mine running good for many years. He said that they didn't have 2 cycle then and it helps with not overheating.

Fireman,
I would not run regular 40wt. in your outboard as it will leave heavy carbon deposits (doesn't burn hardly at all!) and eventually stick your rings. The new outboard oils are far superior to anything available back in 1957 and they'll keep your motor running well for years to come. I think your dealer is hoping you'll blow it up so he can sell you a new motor...
- Scott

The last OMC outboard school I attended, they told me that they recommend 50.1 mixture on all there outboards that need mixed gas. Even on their older outboards. I would use a TCW3 oil only.

According to an old Johnson Sage in my area, the older Johnson's don't like the 50:1 ratio, tend to throw rods or something like that. ~1 pint to 4 gallons, ~1.5 pints to 6 gallons should do it right.

--rml

Like I said the 30 weight has worked for me. I haven't had any trouble and I commercial fish the Ohio 4 to 5 days a week. I was hesitant to post what I did. If anyone is leery about runnign it that way then 40:1 with good tcw 2 cycle oil worked in my enging. It would allow it to idle well and the top end is awesome.

I wouldn't use straight 30 or 40 weight (automotive) to lube the wheels on my lawnmower.

Fireman, no offense, ;) but the reason your engine has done OK with it is because you run the engine a lot and it spends most of its time at operating temperature.

They (OMC) recommended it back then because, that's all that was available.

The lubricity of todays TCW-3 oils is light years ahead of that old stuff. The molecular structure is much smaller which lets it get into places that straight 30 or 40 can't dream of. It also has useful additives to help prevent nasty things happening, such as ring sticking.

True, the ratio is 24:1, however, I've run my 1958 Evin. 7 1/2 for years at about 40:1 using modern oils. One heck of alot less smoke and it idles better.

the correct mixture is 20:1 as as 50 as someone stated you will score the block in due time and 24:1 is a bit lean i am running a 1956 15hp at 20:1 just check your plug color for a nice chocolate brown color .
