Re: Oil Furnace Ignition

If it is pumping oil the chances are the transformer is getting week and the points (ignitors) need reset . I am definately no expert though just personnal experiances. someone will probably be more help than me .

did you get a delivery of oil, the stuuf on bottom of the tank will clog the filter, sounds like you filter is clogged, there is a canister type located on the oil line in most cases also there is one on the pump, but for now you can try to bleed the pump of air, there is a screw on the pump it has a nipple on it for a hose to attached to, try loosen the the screw with the burning running till the oil comes out of the hose, then tighten up and see if it fires up!

my mistake the electrodes may be cracked, you have to shut burner down and take out nozzle assembly clean off with some zep look at the electrodes for crack in them, could also be transformer bad, open cover carefully and see if you have spark with a screwdiver for one teminal to the other !

Re: Oil Furnace Ignition

There's a few things to check, first, is the oil line freezing up because of the outside temp being very low? sometimes water gets in the tank from condensation, and a quick drop in temp will cause it to freeze in the line.
Second, did you try bleeding the fuel line, hit the start button, open the vent on the burner a little (it looks like a brake bleeder valve) and make sure you get all the air out, you may need a small piece of hose over it, and a can for the fuel oil to go in (this will let you know if your filters clogged). Next if that don't work, shut everything down, take out the nozzle assembly, check to see that the electronic eye (between the electrode rods "points") is not too dirty to see the flame, or it will give you a no atart condition. Next check the points for adjustment, they should be about 1/16" to 1/8", in front of the nozzle. If this all fails, your tip maybe dirty, you can unscrew it, and try cleaning it, or just replace it with a matching size. Finally if this all doesn't work, your transformer for the points maybe bad, not sure how to test this, hope this helps, good luck. Mike

Re: Oil Furnace Ignition

Do the stuff that MikDee says, but pull the nozzle/electrode assembly first. That will tell you a lot. If the electrodes are oil or wet, it's not getting spark. If they are dry then you're not getting any oil.

Since you've pushed the reset several time, hope it is no oil. Otherwise it's gonna be a very smoky restart. Whatever you do, don't stop it when it's smoking like that. Just open the windows and let it clear itself out.

Another thing...If you are pulling the nozzle/electrode assembly it's a good time to adjust the electrodes and put in a new nozzle. Nozzles are only about $10US and can make a big difference.

Re: Oil Furnace Ignition

If the firebox is saturated take a piece of paper lite and put it in the firebox it will burn the oil out, do not keep hitting the reset till you find out why there is no spark could be a bad transformer!

Re: Oil Furnace Ignition

Could also be a bad electronic eye. I keep a spare on hand along with a new nozzle. Transformers are normally just tested with a screwdriver and throw one huge continious spark...... not for the timid to try unless you are shown how to do it.

I did have a problem once in a shop furnace where water had gotten into the tank..... try to drain some of the line into a clear plastic bottle and look for separation.... most tanks have elevated pickups to avoid it. If it is water in the fuel oil keep draining until it is pure fuel.

Yes to this. But, BE CAREFUL!!! . If you hit the reset button a bunch of times and were still pumping oil in there when you through the paper in there is going to be one hell of a big whooooosh!!!! Keep your face far away!!!! Unless you want to see a doctor.

If there is no whoosh you were getting no fuel. Do what the others said above to fix the fuel problem. Then check your transformer for spark. Then adjust your electrodes for proper distance. My old furnace had no eye on it. I didn't know the new ones did.

Ayuh,........

In my experience,....
You've probably got a bit of Soot on the ends of the Electrodes that's wet with oil,+ causing them to Short Out instead of Sparking.......

The advise above is Spot On,.....
Pull the burner assembley, Clean it, Adjust it,+ Replace the Nozzle......

Bob brings up another point,... The Electronic Eye,.....
But,.....
Usually when they go Bad,.... The burner will Fire,+ then shut down after a few seconds........
