Oil/Gas Mix 1962 'rude 40hp

Hi,
Hope no one minds this question (I searched the forum for 24-1 and 24:1 and 24 to 1 and came up with nothing, I figured I would find something... might not have searched right or something).

My '62 evinrude lark 40hp says 24:1 oil mix in every book. I got real lucky and stumbled across a 30 year OMC mechanic who SWARES up and down that with modern oil you can safely run 50-1. Not that I doubt him but I have seen and heard so many conflicting stories out there.

I will tell you this: it smokes an awful lot on the 24:1 (breaking in new rings right now with 24:1) and maybe runs a little rough too. Using Quicksilver oil.

Any input appreciated..

They switched to 50:1 in 64 , bearings changed, 62 was old school, run it 24:1.

You are getting ready to start a small battle, many opinions. The rule I have always heard was, If it had needle bearings on the crank and rods you could run modern oil at 50:1 ratio. Yours should have needle bearings.

my 64 40hp says 50:1 right on the cover for the pull cord

it DOES have needle bearings on rods and crank but it is indeed a '62 (Model#35530).
I see the dilemma already.
Personally I would prefer 50-1 since the 24-1 ratio dumps and AWFUL LOT in the test tank (and thus the lake as well) plus much easier on the wallet too. But I don't want it to get too hot either (I also heard running J4J plus are a little less hot that J6J).

Yep, a highly argued and emotional subject. If you want to get in a fight, this is the topic to do it on.

The facts: The mix is 24:1 before 1964, 50:1 1964 and after. The argue point: the motor is the same before and after 1964. You figure it out.

HOWEVER----It is 24:1 during break-in period. So since you are in the break-in period, it is 24:1, no arguement.

Another aspect to the discussion comes in when it is proposed that ALL 24:1 motors can now be run at 50:1. If the particular 24:1 model has the same bearings as its 1964 50:1 counterpart, then go ahead and run it at 50:1 once you've checked out that all of the bearings are correct. There are some small motors that still had sleeve bearings until the late 70's (the 4 hp, for example) that I still would not run at 50:1.
