Oil/Gas mixture off due to non-working fuel gauge

I didn't realize my fuel gauge was off (its operational but reads incorrectly apparently) so I went to put gas in my '94 Evinrude 2-Stroke and put enough oil for 10 gallons in it (50-1 mix). Well I got to the station and it only took 3 gallons. Its a 30 gallon tank.

Called my local shop and they said don't worry about it, it'll just burn a lot more oil. So I took it out today fishing for 5 hours and didn't notice any additional oil burning at all and it ran fine.

My question is now that I ran it for a while, should I go and put the 7 remaining gallons in it?

Thanks!

I wouldn't put 7 gals. in without the associated amount of oil for it. Do one of two things.

1 - run the tank down as far as your comfortable to do so. Then fill it up and add appropriate ratio of oil.

2 - Just add appropriate amount of oil with the new 7 gals. and do so for future fill-ups.

Either way it will return to correct ratio soon enough.

I ran double the amount of oil to break my motor in. It may have smoked a bit, but no problems with fouled plugs.

Too much oil = smoke, maybe fouled plugs.

Too little oil = time for a new motor.

You pick.

Continue filling with the usual mix of fuel and oil. Extra oil will not hurt and will eventually end up at the correct mix.

Run it like it is -- you should be fine. If it really bothers you, put 2 or 3 gal. of gas in, and from then on use your normal ratio. But I really wouldn't worry about it.

Actually, not to be snotty, I believe he acurately read your post and responded correctly.

You added enough oil for 10 gallons of fuel. You pumped in 3 gallons of fuel. At that point you had too high of a ratio. When you burn off 7 gallons of fuel/oil mix you have burned off most of the additional oil. If you add 7 gallons of fuel without adding additional oil you will then have too low of a ratio of oil for the recommended mix of your engine.

While you might not have liked the way Tedious answered your question he gave you a concise and correct answer.

I apologise in advance if I missed intended humor in your response.

No offense intended. Here?s a translation:

?Too much oil = smoke, maybe fouled plugs.? means:

If you just fill the tank, and put the regular amount of oil in for the gas you just added, you?ll be running a little heavy on the oil, so your motor may smoke a bit. At worst, you could foul a set of plugs, but at least you won?t hurt the motor.

?Too little oil = time for a new motor.? means:

If you just throw 7 gallons of gas in, you?ll have no clue what mixture you?re running, and it there?s too little oil, you risk frying the motor.

The reason you?ll have no clue is twofold:

1) You don?t know how much fuel mixture you used up ?fishing for 5 hours.?
2) Even if you happen to have used up exactly 7 gallons of fuel mixture on your 5 hour fishing trip, you still won?t end up with a 50-1 mix. To clarify still further:

- you started out with 27 gallons in the tank, 27 gallons of gas and 69.1 ounces of oil
- you added enough oil for 10 gallons of gas ? 25.6 ounces, for a total of 94.7 ounces
- you added 3 gallons of gas, making your ratio just over 40:1.
- Assuming you used 7 gallons of gas fishing, you now have 23 gallons of gas and 73.6 ounces of oil in the tank ? still a 40:1 ratio, of course
- If you add 7 gallons of gas, you?ll have 30 gallons of gas in the tank, and (still) 73.6 ounces of oil. That?s a ratio of 52:1 ? probably not enough difference to matter, but maybe your measuring isn?t perfect

If you used more than 7 gallons of gas, you?ll end up with an even higher ratio; if the ratio is too high, bye bye motor.

?You pick.? means it?s your motor and your choice.

Good luck with it!
