Oil/Gas Mixture...

On my 125 Force... the ratio for oil to gas is 50-1. Now if that ratio happens to get messed up, and a bit too much oil was added, will the engine not work properly?

Should I put oil in after filling it with gas so I know exactly how much to put in? Before I looked at my gas tank and noticed it was half full, so I decided to put the oil in(equal to half my tank 50-1 ratio) and then fill it with gas, hoping that the gas flow would mix it up. But it turns out I put in more oil than I needed for the amount of gas. Will this cause the engine to run rough?

More oil wont hurt anything. Break in for a rebuit motor is 24 to 1. YOur plugs may foul easier and you will be smoking a little more. Best to add gas first then figure oil to add. 2.6 oz per gallon of gas.

More is better. On a 2-stroke engine if you do not put enough oil into the gas you will ruin the bearings, and thats all she wrote for the engine. Use the best 2-stroke oil you can find that is rated for outboards. I currently use a synthetic 2-stroke oil which smokes less and lubes better. Get an oil measuring device which shows exactly how much to put in, that way you will always be sure. You can pick them up at almost any marine supply store, Cabelas sells them if you are near one.

Right now I have been using a regular 2-stroke oil. Is it okay to begin using synthetics? Will the blend with the left over 2-stroke hurt or damage the engine?

SSS

a 16 ounce bottle will treat 6 gallons at a 50:1 ratio. I run with three 6 gallon tanks on my Bayliner. I also add a fuel conditioner/stabilizer to combat varnishing and the effects of ethanol base fuels.

N_F_A , if both oils are tcw-3 rated, you can mix them.
They have to mix with other tcw-3 oils to get the tcw-3 rating.

Re: Oil/Gas Mixture...

Thanks Roscoe, I accidentally picked up a synthetic blend and wasn't sure if it was safe or not to mix it with the previous mix of regular 2-stroke and 87 octance. I picked up a proper 2-stroke oil afterwards, but will check to see if it's TCW-3 rated and if I can mix the two together I will. Also, is 2-cycle the same as 2-stroke? Is there much difference?

Thanks again,

SSS

Thanks Roscoe, just curious as I've seen some 2-cycles and they don't say anything about marine applications.

SSS

There are two types.
Watercooled which generally run cooler.

And air cooled, that run hot, like a weedeater.

You need tcw-3 rated oil for your outboard.
TCW stands for Two Cycle Watercooled,
