Notice oil coming out at this spot..it was running out or anything just saw that oil had came out of here...I trimmed the drive down and then saw oil with some chalky white stuff come out of it and then it stopped...

Thought I would see if any body on here knows what this means???

Thanks,

Sean

If this is a 2 stroke motor a little oil at the exhaust port is normal, I get a bit on my kicker motors when trolling for long periods, it's a bit of mixed oil and water, which looks off white. Depends how slow I am going as far as when it happens. Is it a 2 or 4 stroke?

Is that the water intake or an exhaust port? Outboard, I/O? What kind?

Moving to Mercruiser IO forum. It's an Alpha I Gen II outdrive.
Time to remove the drive, drain the gear lube and do a pressure test of the drive.
Look on the inside of the drive around the pump and shift shaft and check for leaks with a spray bottle of soapy water.

Re: Oil Here???IS This Normal??

Sorry Guys....Totally forgot to give that info..Its a 1995 Mercruiser 4.3 LX Alpha 1...Is this a need to repair quickly type of issue or something to keep an eye on..New to boats so don't have a lot of experience with them....

I did notice that under that engine hood when you expose the engine there is a clear box towards the top of the engine with a line saying fill to this line(...Which I am guessing in the oil for the outdrive) cause i know where the other engine oil is...at the start of the season it was just below the line and it has gone down noticeably...

Any more info or help would be great....

Thanks again..

Sean..

You don't have to fix it right now. Just don't put it in the water until you fix it.

If oil is leaking out, water is leaking in. Water doesn't work near as well as the gear lube does on the bearings and gears. Not a big problem though, you can get new aftermarket ones for just under 2000 bucks.

Below is a service manual likn for your drive, might want to download it (free) and do some reading. It's not a big deal to pull the drive, and with a little help and you reading, shouldn't be to hard to fix.

2000 bucks for a new out drive....or did you add one to many zeros..The only way to see what the problem is to pull the out drive off??? Have a week long trip at the lake coming up and need try to get this problem solved..

We have been at the lake numerous times this year haven't noticed anything wrong what so ever..Is this an issue that just suddenly happens or could it have been an ongoing issue that just really to show to where it was noticed...

Don't have a marine shop close to where we live so we are having to try to figure this out on our own...

Thanks a million for the help thus far...

Re: Oil Here???IS This Normal??

Ok...I will do that..

What could happen if i fill up the oil reservoir to the proper level where it needs to be..Put the boat on the water then check oil level after driving it for a while..If a new out drive is probably needed then what can it hurt...

Will hooking the muffs to it and running also work....

Thanks,

Sean

Sarcasm translates poorly online... He's saying you don't have to fix it now - you can fix it later for $2k when your outdrive breaks for good & you need to replace it or you can fix it now before (hopefully) any permanent damage has been done.

You sound like you're looking for excuses to ignore the problem rather than do what Don suggested earlier on (pressure testing the drive & looking for leaks around seals) or what Bond-o suggested (checking for water in the oil).

That's alot of oil leaking out from a very bad place. If you so interested in running the boat and ignoring what everyone is telling you needs to be done, then by all means, go out and have fun. When you grenade that out drive and get towed back in and someone gives you a bill for 4 large for an R&R and a new drive, don't complain on this forum..

Bring it to a reputable mechanic (as it is obvious you have no idea or even the slightest clue as to what maintenance and mechanical proceedures are) and get it repaired. You can pay him now or you can pay him MUCH more later. Better yet, trade it in for a pontoon with an electric trolling motor, no desire to do maintenance / repaires are required.

Always wondered why people ask for some advice and when sound advice is given, it is totally ignored for the valid reason "but I was planning to go out on the water next week". EESH

maybe we didn't answer the OP's question. Is this Normal. Answer: NO, it's a "hint" of some major problems.

Maybe think of it in other terms, if it's helpful. You find your wife has an online boyfriend, so do you confront her NOW with the problem or just wait until she moves out? :D

Perhaps if you did indeed read the long list of reply's, you would see his question was answered numerous times that is was a major problem to have drive oil leaking from the water intakes. After those reply's, the OP questioned the validity of the reply's and was more concerned about upsetting scheduled outing than protecting his investment by getting repairs done before major damage occurs, if it hasn't already.

I, possibly, may have been a little "harsh", but sometimes that is what it takes for something to sink in for some folks. If it was too offensive for anyone that is a bit sensitive, my appologies.

"You find your wife has an online boyfriend, so do you confront her NOW with the problem or just wait until she moves out?" You have a situation you need to deal with? Perhaps this is the wrong forum to bring this up in.....

Nuff said on this subject. Peace out....

I dunno, once she moves out you'll have more money for another bigger/better boat :)

Shift shaft seal, water pump base seal or the driveshaft seal in the upper. water only hole! keep running it like that and your lower will go bang. get a good tow rope.
