Oil Hose Broke

I have a 1989 Sea Ray Laguna with a Sea Ray (Mercury) 175HP Outboard. While driving it this weekend the "semi clear hose" from the Oil reservoir broke. (This is the hose that takes the oil from the reservoir to mix with the gas.) Obviously since there was no oil the engine stopped running. I am afraid that since my engine did not receive oil during that time I will have to have the engine completely overhauled.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
Should I replace the hose and try to start the engine to see how it operates?

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Oil Hose Broke

Sorry to hear about your problem, This sucks But this is why there is a Phrase called, "Preventive Maintenance". Not what you want to hear now though, right? Unfortunatly everything under the cowling is often overlooked.

Sorry if Im a bit hard on ya, but thats just me.

Premix what fuel you have left in the tank at 50:1, replace all of the hoses under the cowling, fuel, oil, (Blead as per the manual), You do have a manual right? then see if it starts. If it does or doesnt, then take a compression test, they should be within about 5#s of each other and around 120#s each. Look on the plugs as you remove them and see if they have any aluminum on them. If they do you are toast.

Probably worth pulling the spark plugs first, and rotating the flywheel by hand to see if it is siezed before trying to start it again.

Did any alarms go off to let you know you had an oil problem, or an overheating motor before it stoppped running?

Re: Oil Hose Broke

Thanks for the response. No alarms went off. I talked to a Mercury Technician and he said this hose is after the oil reservoir and there are no alarms for the oil after that. I will pull the spark plugs to see if it will turn first.

I have had the engine serviced at the end of every second season but never told anyone to replace these hoses. I would tell everyone now to get the oil hoses changed regularly. Actually it would only take about 10 minutes to change them yourself.
