Re: Oil in gas tank... uh oh
you're not out of the woods yet......
First, the alarm should sound on EVERY start. It's how it's tested. You have NO oil pressure prior to starting the engine. (the engine is not turning, hence, no oil pressure)
When you start the engine, the alarm should & will sound until the oil pressure comes up.
Once the oil pressure is "up" the alarm will cease. The oil pressure switch doesn't require much pressure to operate......usually less than 10psi or so.....Some oil pressure gages that have an 80psi or so full scale reading will not indicate 10 or lower psi levels well.....
The oil sump on that V-8 is simply a reservoir. It holds around 5-7 qts. The oil pickup from the oil pump is submerged in the oil but not at the very bottom of the sump.
You could probably be at 3 to4 qts in the sump and not uncover the pickup and then not "lose" oil pressure because the pump would not lose "prime"......
What this means is that if you added 1 qt to get the alarm to go out, you may have severely and permanently damaged the engine by running it so low on oil so as to LOSE oil pressure.
You need to ensure that you check the oil with the dipstick (THINK WITH YOUR DIPSTICK!!!
) EVERYDAY prior to starting the engine.
Well,On a related noted, last night after I put the oil in and started the engine, I got the alarm again. Does it take a few minutes for the oil to "settle in" or take effect? The engine sounded A LOT better than it did prior to putting it in - but that alarm was still throwing me off (and hardly any oil pressure - perhaps that's due to only adding 1 quart).
