Re: Oil in lower unit

I may be showing my ignorance with certain outboards, but using the OMC Cobra and Mercruiser examples.........

You should fill the lower exactly how the manufacturer says to do it or you may be buying a new lower.

(Fill a Cobra like a Mercruiser and you'll be buying a new Cobra.....happens all the time!!)

Great responses, great advice everyone. I don't have a screw in tip on my hose, but I cut the top off of the cone-shaped cap that comes on the bottle and it plugs pretty well and can be pulled quick. Putting the vent cap in is the part I was forgetting. This was a 90 hp Johnson OB on a 1981 Viking deck boat. Got it in the water Sunday and everything went well.

That's hard without a threaded hose as you could really use a third hand. The upside is once the vent plug is in, pulling the fill bottle off and sticking in the drain plug should be less mess than unthreading a hose while it leaks some.

Good luck with your next time. I was perplexed as well when I first started messing with these things. One of the problems with a DIY that you only do once a year. Takes a long time to learn the lessons that a tech learns the first day on the job as an apprentice . . .

After RTFB (that's military for Read the Freakin Book), the mfg suggests allowing an oz to run out to allow for expansion during operation.
