well guys looks like my boating days are numbered 2 to be exact... i live in the florida panhandle and that GIANT oil spill in the gulf is slowly creeping my direction... and to be honest with repairs and all i havent had the boat in the water for one second this season... im awefully bummed and because of the shear size of the spill it looks like this will effect my community and my home waters drastically for the next couple of years.. im not sure what im gonna do now. i fish, i boat, i sit on the beach and drink beer... but looks like for no more... very sad....

It sucks alright- but don't assume the worst yet. Time and again, areas affected by something like this recover much sooner than people expect.

No he's prolly screwed on this one, if it works it's way all the way down here I will probably sell my boat because fishing will be dead for several years. U of F scientists actually think the east coast will be hit harder if the spill gets picked up by the Gulf loop current, either way this could be our worse fear.

::sigh:: i appreciate the good words... but after all the reports ive seen i do believe we as a community are in big trouble... this is going to impact everyone in my area... destin florida to be exact... we are a fishing based community err tourist also im almost besides my self thinking of the actual damage that will be immenent... you guys gotta understand this will certainly ruin everything ive known... i was born and bread here.. honestly the next couple of days will absolutely devastate me.. im sorry to put my worries on the fellow iboats crowd but.... gosh... i cant even explain how bad this will effect this area... we are known as "the worlds prettiest beaches" for 2 more days... im crushed...

I was down there a couple summers ago - just a fantastic area - this truly does suck. Not sure it'll be horrible for fish though - oil's on top of the water.

What a complete disaster!
All the fishermen,shrimp and oyster boats will be devastated.

We were watching the news of this on the Discovery Channel, going into detail on what they were trying to do to stop the oil flow. Both my wife and I looked at each other in amazement. I mean seriously, it was a matter of time before this very thing happened. How on gods green earth would this type of event not be in thier standard emergency procedures system? Seriously, how can you not have an emergency valve on the sea floor? In this day of technology and robotics, we find this totally inexcusable... although we won't feel the effects of this up north (maybe some inflated fuel prices just because they can) I'll be feeling a little twinge of guilt every time I go to the gas station.

The enviromental loss will be staggering...my best wishes to all of you that are effected by this travesty. Much like the exxon valdeze (sp?) all we can do is hope for the best in a bad situation.

Add me to the list of very upset people. One of my favorite places to be is right where Alabama and Florida come together. I love all the water there. I also have family on the Mississippi Gulf Coast still trying to get life back to normal after Katrina. My father even goes down into the areas of LA to fish. Its all marsh and how do you get oil out of the marsh?


What I do not understand is why you cant blow up some charges or something and cause a mile long well to collapse on itself?

Seems to me all BP is worried about is how to cap and keep the well functional. I am ready for a Bruce Willis like Armagedon group to go blow up the area around it and cause the well to fall in on itself.

Isn't it like a foot in diameter a mile long. Seems it can be caved in.

Or lets poor 8 tons of concrete right over the sucker.

Where is the ingenuity to close that damn well off!

whats a few sea critters?.
its also why here on the atlantic coast of NC I have voted time and time again,NO OFFSHORE drilling until you can absolutly convince me you wont pollute or seashore and sounds.
and yes, we are worried about the loop currents dragging the nasty up the gulf stream where our predominate north east winds will wash it on our beaches and wipe everything out.
at least the piping plovers will be pre-oiled and grill ready.
but it does suck and the 210K gallons a day for possibly months to come have everyone worried.
good luck and lets all say a prayer for those affected and those trying to stem its effects.

What I don't understand is the wells all have break away connections. No matter what happens, the well is supposed to cap itself when broken. This is a fairly common event, especially when hurricanes come. Remember all the oil rigs trashed by Katrina? No oil spills then because they worked as they were supposed to.

I wonder if BP was not up to standards or something. They are responsible for the entire clean up bill. Good time to sell BP stock if it hasn't already tanked.

It really is a tragedy and feel for all of the affected boaters. i know how frustrated I get when mother nature restricts my time on the water much less when a corporation does.
I am also curious as to why this pipe leaked when the hurricane damaged rigs didnt. Saftey valves have been a policy for years so what happened? Not to lead too far into conspiracy theorys but this freak incident seemed to go off all too well (in a bad way) right after the new drilling was approved and at a time when the crude market is cheap.

There has been a lot of deregulation in the oil industry and there is also alot of subcontractors involved in setting up and drilling for oil in the gulf. There are several safety valves that should have been in place but it was an exploratory well and it's believed that the valves were not installed. This is gonna be a huge lawsuit against BP since it was their well unfortunately you see it reflected at the gas pumps.

We feel your pain, even in southern Missouri. I can name about 20 families from here that vacation in the area, Gulf Shores, Destin, Mobile. We were supposed to be in Perdido Key for a week in June; looks like we'll have to cancel. We're bummed, but this little inconvenience for us doesn't compare to those living and working in the region.

Someone needs to ask, if this is the only pump that has no failsafes in place. if there are others, then they need to put them in place. If this is the only one, THEN! we should be worried!!!!

I just got back from the beautiful northwest Florida coast. It is hard to think that in just a few days/weeks it may all be black.

There are many people that depend on the water for a living. It is hard to think of the many people and animals that may be effected.

you need to do a little research before you start spouting nonsense you know nothing about. I am in no way an authority but know some--
1. there are several redundant blow out protectors (BOPs) on every well but these are damaged and not accessible now.
2.this was a freak accident -there are 4,000+ rigs in the GOM
3. this is a DRILL RIG- not a production rig- it would be 5 yrs away from effecting oil prices.
4. only 20% of the oil we use comes from GOM.
5. 11 men lost their lives
6. even Obama has cabinet members there to do everything possible.

before you cancel your vacations or sell your boats find out what is happening.
they are still running West offshore outta Venice fishing. I have fished Venice-Orange Beach , and vacation in Destin. Thing may go bad but please do not abandon these areas just yet.
