i have a 225/3.0 offshore, 96 model. a mech talked me into abandoning the oil injection last year wehn i bought the engine. most of the fishing i do involves drifting at idle. the problem is it loads up and of course it should i guess since it was designed to operate at alot less oil than the 50-1 im mixing it at now when it idles. the question is this: is the oil injection system as fragile as i was told it was? if it is are there any other options to use it like it is now and reduce the excessive smoke/loading up? thanks in advance :)

If it has a plastic worm drive gear on the crank like the 2.0-2.4-2.5 v6's, then it would succumb to extreme overheat or overspeed. Otherwise even the plastic is pretty reliable.

A normally loaded and run fishing motor should not tear up the oil system.

One option to try is to go to a high quality synthetic oil. Penzoil full synthetic is very good.

I have put a louder alarm on mine, (2.4) because it was hard to hear the horn at speed. (wrap'd weeds and overheated slightly once.) That's easy to do with a loud sonalert module.

hope it helps

Re: Oil Injection Question!!

1000 hrs of trouble free operation on my 1988 90hp engine. Not sure if it has the plastic gear or not, but it was the first year for oil injection on the midsize engines.

Re: Oil Injection Question!!

Coming from someone that has not heeded the mechanic's suggestions on older 2 stroke V6's I recommend pre-mixing. Use synthetic blend at 1 qt per 13 gallons. Better off smoking than blowing-I have had 2 oil failures in 2 years-1 suzuki and 1 merc.
