Recently purchased boat has a 1993 90h.p. Mariner with oil injection on it. I have heard some people quit using the oil injection and start mixing after the motors start getting up there in years.

Should I keep using the injection or mix?
The engine will some times strip the oil pump drive gear and self destruct, I guess that depending on the engine hours and how deep your pockets are, will detremine what your decision is on the system
hello
never heard of a stripped gear on a 90. could happen I guess but I have only seen it on poorly maintained v6's that used a nylon gear.
the big thing on all merc oil injections is to replace all those chintzy vynil lines every 3 or 4 years before they break.
nope
the only warning is the low tank alarm on that motor. the v6 motors used a rotation sensor cause the "ang a neers" knew the nylon gear would be failure prone. I believe all the inline motors used a brass gear like the rest of the world. usually what kills the nylon gear is rust on the driven gear on the v6. a small bit of rust due to improper storage will eat the nylon rapidly. but all the mercs that used a block mounted pump used and still use them motor killing vynil lines. replace them if they get the least bit hard and they never give problems.
its always cheaper to do pro-active maint rather than reactive maint.
