Oil injection

Hello all I have a 1996 mariner 125 offshore 4 cyl.
Do you all suggest bypassing the oil injection?
If so how do you do it I have an idea but want some more help.thanks

It's a crap shoot. Some say yes others no. I did it on my 12 year old engine because I just slept better at night. That's the only reason. I lost an engine due to a stuck shut thermostat with the engine a recent purchase before I had been boating for very long and back then there were no over temp alarms. The oil system has an alarm, but it's a reservoir alarm, not an oil flow alarm. I just didn't want to worry about losing an engine for a failed oil pump regardless of it's reliability record.

Some of the Mercury systems have an alarm for rotation of the oil pump.---Some motors do not have this feature.-----The motors have a plastic gear inside and on the crankshaft to drive the oil pump.----I have seen those stripped / failed.----An easy way to disable the feature of oil injection is to TEE the oil pump discharge to the oil pump intake line.-----Let it recirculate the oil.------Then when you want to sell the motor it is simple to put oil injection back in service.

I just undid 3 screws and one hose, pulled the pump assy out, pulled the drive gear out and put the assembly (minus the gear) back in. Took all of about 15 minutes. Even left the oil in the onboard tank to keep from having to fool with the alarm. Worked for me.

If you decide to disable the oiling system you can disconnect the oil lines and the tank level sender but be sure to remove the pump drive shaft. If you dont do this the dry pump will seize and the bits of the drive gear and securing bolts will go up a cylinder destroying the motor.

If you do what I did it's easy and not a problem. The shaft/drive gear is an integral part, made out of one piece of steel.

Texasmark thanks for the info. I was considering the type fitted to the black max, however if the oil is taken away from the pump the pump will seize and something has to give. This is a cautionary point only. I have had the max's in the shop with the problem. Not nice.

TM took out the drive gear, once remove, the pump no longer spins and therefor no longer needs oil....it's just a cap at that point. I however still run mine..........But I live each week likes its shark week!! ;) Designing a mircocontroller system to better monitor it doesn't lessen me still living on the edge, somehow......

The biggest failures I have seen on the oil injection on these is overheating melts the gear.
