Oil into gearcase

Hi all just getting an old 68 electroshift 40 up n running,
Found the right grade oil for the gearcase
But having trouble getting the oil into the gearcase the oil fill hole appears not to have been fully drilled at manufacture and the hole is tiny and offset.
I'm loosing as much as I'm getting in
Is there a special method that I'm missing
Im thinking about using a large medical syringe
Does anyone have any tricks or tips?

Are you sure you removed the correct fill screw which is a slot (25) and not the the pivot screw which is a phillips(30). See the attached parts diagram.

You got the wrong screw. The fill plug is a slotted screw directly on the bottom of the front of the g/c. Good luck if you took that other screw out as you may have upset the shift linkage.

Thanks guys I've since found out that these are a bottom fill gearcase and that the top screw "26" is only to show when the gearcase is full.
What a silly design its no wonder they shat themselves so often due to wrong lube or under lubrication.

Now I know I will do the job correctly!

A lot of people use one of the fill pumps, that also helps. I ran a 85 hp electric shift for many many years.

Normal method of filling for many if not most outboard gearcases.
Filling from the bottom ensures that there is no air lock and that it is properly filled.

Drain/fill screw and level screw are usually the same. A small Philips headed screw in the lower part of the case is likely to be the pivot for part of the linkage in manual shift boxes. Take that out by mistake and you can have big problems getting it back if anything inside moves.

Not sure what screw you have removed ??
