I am kinda of new to boating have a 1998 Johnson 2 stroke 70HP that I just got for fishing a particular lake up in Northern Ontario heard the motor run with the watewr muffs on it but haven't put it into a lake yet.
When I took the motor off the transom saver and put it in the vertical position a very small amount of dark sticky oil dripped on lthe floor--it is not coming out where the cotter pin and nut are but it appears to be coming from where the outside diameter of the prop is the prop guessing is about 6 in. in dia. and it is coming out from that area where there is a small gap when the prop is rotated by hand.
Hoping I lhave explained the area well enouth.
Any help with this would be nuch appreciated thanks len

It's normal. Nothing to worry about. Just unburned fuel leaking out the exhaust.

c/6

Hooty

First welcome - lots of info here. My guess is that the sticky oil that you are seeing is nothing to be concerned about and is the oil from unburned fuel that drains down the walls of the exhaust cavity and out through the cavity by the prop.

Another possibility is a leaking seal on the prop shaft. To check this open (just enough for some oil to drip out) the lower of the two screws to the gearcase (where the gear oil goews). If the oil that drips out is relatively clear you are OK (probably should replace anyway). If it is milky the seal may be bad but you will need to confirm this by having the gearcase pressure and vacume tested.

My guess is that you are OK as is. The best advice I could give you is to get the OMC shop and parts manual for your motor.

You should replace the impeller in the water pump and get a new set of pugs if not done already.

Enjoy.

Howard
