Oil leak in Lower unit

I had stored my boat for about 6 months, I kept the engine trimmed up. I took the boat back to my house trimmed the motor down and oil started to leak from the lower unit around the propeller. Anyone know what this could be or how to fix it? Also it looked like there may have been some water in the oil. I was going to change the fluid anyway. Its on a 1986 Evinrude 115. Thanks in advance

Re: Oil leak in Lower unit

What color is it? If it is a blackish type oil then it is most likely just unburnt oil and carbon from the exhaust. This is normal. It happens in an even larger quantity if you fog the engine before storage. If it is golden in color then it may be gear lube and that could be a seal leaking problem.

Best to look at the lower unit oil anyways, just to be sure. If it is milky white or you see visible water coming out, then you may need to re-seal the lower unit.

Lower unit oil should be changed at least once per year at the end of each season.

Good to store them in the run position so they can drain water/unburnt fuel-oil mix, especially over winter when the water can freeze in there.
