Oil leak on 2003 Mercury 75ELP

We have a mercury 75 ELPTO 2 stoke on our Rib. When we transport the rib on the trailler, the engine is tilted up. When we reach the end of our journey, usually there is some oil on the inside of the boat - which has dripped from the engine. I have removed the Cowell and the leack does not seem to be coming from the oli tank cap seal as it all appears to be dry.<br /><br />We od not have any leakage problesm when the engine is kept in the upright position.<br /><br />Anyone goy any ideas where to start looking.<br /><br />Thanks

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />Have a look at the foam inside the hood in front of the oil tank. If it is saturated with oil, the cap leaks. Otherwise it's fuel/oil coming out of the carbs when tilted. The gas evaporates leaving oil. It shouldn't leak out under normal circumstances, but bouncing around on a trailer makes it kinda inevitable.<br /><br />You might consider a Transom Saver. That would allow you to leave the motor down a bit with less tilt.

I replaced the cap - still the same problem. Regarding the suggestion around the carbs, whereas this may not be normal ..... is it a problem that will turn into something more significant. I have also found that the oli appears ther even if the boat has been statoenery. However the angle of tilt deffinitely affects whetehr or not oil will appear or not. Any more info would be much appreciated.

remove the hood. fill the oil tank. tilt the motor full up and have a refreshing beverage and watch where it leaks. the tank seals on some of the inline mercs were iffy. as were the tank vents.

hey murph,<br /><br />i have a 90 with the same situtation. my buddy is a merc mech and when i noticed the the same (though to be ) problem i popped the same question. he told me that "its leaking from the carbs. most mercs do that when they are tilted up. " i haven't had any problems only visual. to be sure yours is the same as mine check where the air box meets with the carbs.
