Hi new member here I have a alpha one outdrive MR model i noticed oil leaking out of the small water drain hole located just above the lower unit gear case i suspected the O ring had gone bad between the lower unit and upper unit and was leaking into the leg so i replaced it pressure tested the outdrive at 15lbs all was good I filled the outdrive untill oil started to come out the vent and the next day found the same thing NO water was getting into the oil and only about 2-4 0z of oil comes out it dosen't matter if i leave the out drive up or down every time i fill the drive it leaks 2-4 0z I even put 30lbs of pressure in the drive with it full of oil to see if i could make it leak let it set that way overnight (nothing) BUT as soon as i released the pressure it leaked. When i run it with the flushing ears on water pisses out if that drain hole just like a telltale on an outboard it never did that before.I even drove around all day came home drained the outdrive no water got into the oil fill it back up hour later oil running out the drain hole iv'e asked a few people no one has any answers HELP!!!
and thanks in advance

Re: oil leak question

Hard to understand?
How is the oil in the motor? Is it black? Do you have to top it off now and then between oil changes?
Maybe you should let the lower sit in water a few days to see if water comes in. May need new seals.

Re: oil leak question

Are you talking about the weep hole on the portside down low? Just above the bullet!

yes thats where it is coming out of. i'm assuming that a seal has gone bad in the upper gear case.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... It could be 1 of a few seals, or a few seals...

The drive oughta come off to see,...

Re: oil leak question

thanks all for the replys i was searching the site and found a link that i think will help me. it seems that this can be a common problem that can come from the drive shaft seal or waterpump seal Looks like it could be a easy fix if its one of them time will tell

Make sure you check the "shift shaft bushing" seal while you have the lower dropped.
