oil leak

I have a Mercury 7.5 hp motor. I've replaced the water pump and impeller. I also replaced the prop seal and shift shaft seal. I've done a compression test and found no leaks. I also ran the lower unit in a 5 gallon bucket using an electric drill and no oil leaked. Everytime I put the motor back together and run it in a barrel, I get oil all over the place. Is there anything else I can try, before I bring this thing to a pro.

Re: oil leak

Banaman,

Could the oil you're seeing on the water be from the oil in the fuel that the engine is burning?

When you check the gear oil level, has it gone down or is there water in the oil?

Chris..........

Re: oil leak

It's gear lube oil for sure. I was also getting water in the oil, but fixed that when I replaced the shift shaft seal. Most of the oil is collecting below the water pump in the hollow area that leads to the prop. No oil inside the water pump. Thanks for your quick response. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: oil leak

Have you done a pressure and vacuum test on the gear housing?

Re: oil leak

I have done a pressure and found no leaks. Not sure how to do the vacuum check.

Re: oil leak

Same way as a pressure test, except you pull air out instead of pushing it in.

Re: oil leak

I'm still trying to fix this motor. I've done a compression and vaccum check and both are good. I'm thinking the water pump seal may be failing when the motor is running due to pitting on the drive shaft. My question is if the water pump seal is failing wouldn't there be oil inside the water pump. There is no oil getting into the water pump. Oil is showing outside the water pump and water is getting in the lower unit. Please help!!!!! My trolling motor needs a break.
