does anyone know what may be leaking oil from the top oif a 76 merc 500. i replaced the 2 rubber hoses on the side of the motor, behind switch box, but oil seems to be coming from under the flywheel. it is running down the engine and dripping out from lower cowling of engine. is there a top seal i need to deal with? what's involved in replacement? is it ok to use like this (other than the mess??)

Re: oil leak??

There may be a small hose that runs from the lower main bearing to the upper main bearing. This hose pumps oil to the top main bearing under the flywheel.

There is a top oil seal. Sounds like you need to pull the flywheel and have a look. usually if you remove the end cap screws and loosen the crankcase screws next to the end cap, the endcap can be pried out. Be gentle if you do this.

The endcap should have a rubber oring, and a shim. Reuse the shim, replace the oring.
