Hey all I have '84 Mercury 80 horse outboard. My question is can i remove the Propeller shaft and Bearing Carrier without droping the lower unit and if so how do i disengauge the shaft and carrier to pull them out. I need to replace the o-ring and oil seal in and around the Carrier.

Thanks:(

Re: Oil Leak

You can pull the bearing carrier and prop shaft without dropping the lower unit. In fact, it's sometimes easier that way. Once you've removed the carrier lock nut (either unscrew it or chop it up and remove it in bits), the carrier just pulls out (he says laughing), but with a unit of your age, I think it's going to need plenty of 'coaxing', usually with a gas torch.... Be careful, ali falls in a puddle on the floor if it gets too hot.

Once you have the carrier out (the reverse gear may or may not come out with it, doesn't matter), you can just pull the prop shaft straight out. It's not 'secured' to anything.

Re: Oil Leak

Thanks Chris

Ended up having to take the whole lower unit apart and replacing all the gaskets. Found part of my problem was the water tube above my waterpump had come off the pump and was half way up the tube assembly-- most likey the reason i was getting water out the exhaust (not sure where the oil mixture came from).

Its all back to gether now:cool: Now i just cant get figure out the Reverse Lock Cam and getting the Shifting rod splines to align up. Hopefully we will be back on the lake next week:cool::cool:
