Time to pull some covers and go looking. From the pics,I'd guess un-burned fuel/oil mix, like what's in the exhaust housing.Maybe a bad base or adapter housing gasket.

DHP

Yep....what DHP said. It's not that the gaskets are to change...their just a pain in the butt to get to. Some guys just live with the mess it leaves. One word on this...if it's the power head adaptor gasket and it's leaking bad enough to expell exhaust gas into the engine hood, you would really want to change it. The engine won't run well breathing it's own exhuast.

Re: Oil leaking down exhaust housing.

Thank both of you for your speedy replies. I cannot hear any exhaust sounds leaking if the gasket is blown.
I sure hate like the ****ens to pull that power head to replace the gasket. I plan to rebuild the carburetors over the winter, replacing the needle & seat plus making sure the setting for the float level is right on to eliminate any over richness.
I plan to replace the water pump this winter also and while its off I will make sure the inner exhaust housing gaskets are good. If I remember correctly those gaskets looked a little bit to be desired the last time I replaced the water pump.
I am wondering (actually hoping)that if the inner exhaust housing gasket are bad that back pressure is pushing this ooze back up the inside of the exhaust housing and letting it weep out up top as shown on the pictures. Just a wish and prayer. ;)

I have a Johnson 200 that has a similar problem, but mine only leaks on one side. Did you ever find a solution.

In the event anyone else ever searches and finds this topic, I thought I might put what I found on my motor with the same problem. There is a seal on the lower end of the crankshaft that is a pain to get to. However when I pulled my power head it was definitely the culprit. A few special bolts to seal it back up were needed with mine. I suppose they could also leak and cause a problem. Hopefully I wont have to do it ever again.

Are you saying that your leak was from the crankshaft seal and not the power head gasket?

My 82 Evinrude 115 has had the same problem for the last two years. I did not change it because the engine has saltwater corrosion and I figured I would just break a bunch of bolts trying to remove the powerhead. I just wipe it off after each use. Sometimes it leaks worse than others.

I ordered the gaskets and soon as I pick them up from the dealer I am going get started. I just hope that it is only the exhaust housing gasket that is leaking. If the lower crank shaft seal is leaking I may be in a lot of trouble.
