Hi,
I am new to boating just bought my first boat a few months ago. I took all the proper steps to winterize the motor. However, after i refilled the gear case there is oil leaking out. I thought it was a loose oil plug but that was not the case. I found that it was coming out from a small hole above the cavitation plate? this hole looks to be as if it was made to be there. it not a bad seal because it sits above the seal. Why is oil leaking out?

Thanks to whom ever canhelp with this.

Re: Oil leaking from Gearcase

welcome to iboats!!!

did you use a pump or squeeze it in by hand?

it sounds like you have a bad seal.

if you used a pump you could have possibly had somethig stop off the top hole and fut oil in the exhaust leg..... it doesnt sound likely but i seen stranger.

one way to know for sure is to do a pressure test on it........

Is it black oil? It's most likely excess exhaust oil, which is completely normal.

I assume you fogged it, and it could just be excess fogging oil dripping down the exhaust.

Yea i did use a pump. Maybe i overfilled it? I tilted the motor in the upward position and it started pouring out. ill keep an eye on it.

Thanks.

It shouldn't have poured out. Pressure test the gearcase, don't run it until you are sure it holds vacuum and pressure

As someone already mentioned that little hole under the cav plate is a drain for exhaust crud oil that accumulates, there should also a crankcase drain which can sometimes get plugged up and cause other problems, just touch the oil with a finger it give it a sniff and you'll know if it's gear lube. oil residue can ooz from that hole for a couple days after a run, depending on the motor tilt position.

Re: Oil leaking from Gearcase

It has been sitting in the normal operating position since i refilled the gearcase. I ran it for about 10min the other day after i shut it down i saw a small amount of oil on the ground and thought it was coming from the tilt n trim or somwhere in that area. so i tilted the motor up and oil came pouring out. it did slow down to a drip. when i get i chance i will tilt it up again and see what happens.
