Oil leaking from Prop- Lower Unit Area

I noticed some oil leaking from the area where the prop attaches to the lower unit. It was just a few drips but I have not seen it before. I have owned the boat for 18 months and this is the first sight. I don't know the history of the boat.

1975 Johnson 85 HP is the make and model

It seemed to run fine last time out. I have not run it aground or banged the prop so there has been no impact damage since I owned the boat.

Any thoughts on what needs to be done and whether or not this is something that must go to the shop or can I change a seal or something moderately easy.

Thank you all in advance.

going through the same problem, take off the prop check for fishing line,if line there you probably need to replace the prop oil seals, best bet is to do oil change and check for water in gear case if water there then definitly change seals.

It could just be unburned fuel/oil from your p/h. To be sure though, check your l/u oil for any water and if you find some, have it pressure and vacuum checked.

Concur, if you haven't checked or changed you lower oil since you had the boat it is time, you want to look for milky oil, that means a water leak.

Dab a bit of the leaking oil onto your finger and smell it, lower oil has a very distinctive smell but change your lower oil any how, it shouod be done at least once a year just to keep an eye on the condition of the lower.

Thank to all. I went ahead and changed it. Looked more brown than white. New stuff looked greenish. Haven't seen any leaking since so I think I am good. The level was good when I opened the vent screw too. No particles or shavings to speak off.
