Oil leaking from the lower end. Please

Hi again. I have been doing some work on my 1961 40hp Johnson recently. Including help from here with the ideling S/S needle. Seems that I got it running fairly smoothly but now I have oil leaking from the lower end pretty bad. I did change the gear oil a few days ago. While doing this I removed the lower gear casing (not on purpose) and put it back together. Yesterday when I was runing it while adjusting the SS valve needle, it leaked alot of oil in to the barrel. I also noticed oil try to gush out of the rectangle plate with two screws on each corner.(not sure what this holds in but it seems pretty empty in there). Shall I start looking for a new outboard or is this something an inexperienced outboard owner can maybe fix. I'm thinking something is out of place or a seal maybe broken inside. I can't tell you exactly where this oil is coming from but it's quite a bit.
Title should say, "Please Help"

Thanks, Chris

Re: Oil leaking from the lower end. Please

Probably just unburnt oil/exhaust mix. When you run the motor in a test tank, it can get pretty gunky with this residue. Looks like a milkshake on the top of the water and on the sides of the tank. If you're worried about a gearcase leak, crack the bottom (fill) bolt and see if the oil coming out is clear or milky and if any water comes out. If that looks good, then it's just exhaust residue you're seeing.

Hi Lindy. The oil in the gear case is always milky, even a few hours of running after I had changed it. I did seal up the gear access slot a little better and tried it. Not as much oil this time but still some. It's coming from the exaust I would assume. I will trying it tomorrow in a real lake. Thanks, Chris
