Hi again. I have been doing some work on my 1961 40hp Johnson recently. Including help from here with the ideling S/S needle. Seems that I got it running fairly smoothly but now I have oil leaking from the lower end pretty bad. I did change the gear oil a few days ago. While doing this I removed the lower gear casing (not on purpose) and put it back together. Yesterday when I was runing it while adjusting the SS valve needle, it leaked alot of oil in to the barrel. I also noticed oil try to gush out of the rectangle plate with two screws on each corner.(not sure what this holds in but it seems pretty empty in there). Shall I start looking for a new outboard or is this something an inexperienced outboard owner can maybe fix. I'm thinking something is out of place or a seal maybe broken inside. I can't tell you exactly where this oil is coming from but it's quite a bit.
